Newton, Iowa—The K & N Filters Cup, traveling trophy for the National Midget Driver of the Year was unveiled last week at Iowa Speedway during the Casey’s General Stores Triple Crown event sanctioned by The United States Auto Club.
The 2007 season marks the ninth year for the National Midget Driver of the Year Championship presented by Chevrolet, Ford, Mopar and Toyota Racing Development. The traveling trophy contains the top five drivers from each season starting with Jason Leffler’s inaugural championship in 1999 to Brad Kuhn’s second title in 2006 on the base of the trophy.
Among those present at ceremony held during the USAC Drivers meeting in the Iowa Speedway Media Center were the two most previous champions Bobby East (2004) and Kuhn (2005-06). Also present were Charles Meier from K & N, and NMDOTY founder and director Bryan Gapinski
The trophy is slated to make appearances at several open wheel races, museums and trade shows during the year. The trophy will be next on display at Seekonk (Mass.) Speedway on Saturday Night May 19 during the NEMA Midget Series event.
The Seekonk event will also be one of five scheduled National Midget Driver of the Year Nights held nationwide, in which competitors will receive additional purse money for the evenings race events from Chevrolet, Ford, Mopar and Toyota Racing Development.
