IHRA Championship On The Line For Team Aruba https://racingnation.com/ihra-championship-on-the-line-for-team-aruba/ Fri, 12 Aug 2016 14:46:35 +0000 http://racingnation.com/?p=13468 With schedule changes to the International Hot Rod Association's 2016 tour, this weekend's Northern Nationals has become the final event of the season.

MARTIN, Mich. (August 12, 2016): With schedule changes to the International Hot Rod Association’s 2016 tour, this weekend’s Northern Nationals has become the final event of the season. Three rounds of qualifying and three rounds of eliminations are all that’s left to determine the 2016 Champions. In Pro Stock, Team Aruba sits a mere three points out of first, making their first ever IHRA Pro Stock World Championship a serious possibility.

Team Aruba has had a standout year, with three back-to-back finals earning them their hard fought points position. Points leader and reigning world champion Cary Goforth is a worthy opponent and will not be easily overcome. However, Team Aruba, led by team owner Ven Eman and driver Trevor Eman, have found their stride this season and are primed to secure their first ever IHRA Pro Stock World Championship.

“Although we expected this year to consist of more races, we understand the position the IHRA is in with having to remove some of the races from the schedule,” told Eman, who tested Thursday before qualifying begins on Friday. “With this being the championship-deciding weekend, we are very excited to be in the position we are in. Less than a round separates us from Cary Goforth, which will make every lap count. We want to qualify well and then make sure we go one more round than Cary. It would be nice to continue our final round trend, but the bigger picture is, of course, the championship. We will be giving it everything we have to turn this weekend into positive results.

“Our team has worked hard all year to make it into this position. We are ready to work even harder yet this weekend. I cannot thank our team and our partners enough for helping us achieve the success we’ve had this weekend. This Aruba.com Mustang is ready for the biggest battle its seen yet.”

Two qualifying rounds will be held on Friday, August 12. A final qualifying round will be held on Saturday before eliminations are completed Saturday evening. The entire event will be broadcast live online.

“I know everybody back home is rooting us on and they will be watching the live feed,” Eman continued. “We invite all our friends to keep up with us on Facebook, where we’ll be posting results, as well as the live feed. We certainly appreciate their support.”

This will be the weekend to watch as every run is one step closer to championship decisions. Should Team Aruba secure the IHRA Pro Stock World Championship it will be the first time an Aruba native has won an international drag racing championship in a professional category. Eman and his team will do everything in their power to make sure that happens: “Nothing would make me prouder than to take this championship home to Aruba!”

Watch Team Aruba as they chase down their championship. Every run is broadcast live on MotorManiaTV.com.

Follow Team Aruba on Facebook and Twitter. Find race results, team updates, videos and photos. Also leave your comments to cheer on Team Aruba!

Records set, a first-time winner claims an Ironman and epic battles among the world’s best racers

ORLANDO, Florida (March 6, 2016) – The stage has been set for one of the best season’s in International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) drag racing history. The IHRA AMSOIL Nitro Nationals at Orlando Speed World Dragway put the world’s best driver’s center stage and the result was unprecedented.

The 2016 season opener kicked off over the weekend with full fields in all classes that included 2015 World Champions, veterans and a few newcomers to the IHRA Drag Racing Series. What ensued over the three-day event marked one of the most exciting competitions with major upsets, record times, mechanical issues and some of the closest finishes in years.

The AMSOIL Nitro Funny Car class appeared to pick up where it left off in 2015 with Jason Rupert and Mike McIntire Jr. running side-by-side in the first two rounds of qualifying. By the end of the qualifying sessions, it was Rupert who took the top spot followed by Mark Sanders and McIntire Jr. The momentum continued for Rupert as he shattered the AMSOIL Nitro Funny Car record with a 5.559 at 261.93 mph in the first round. The semifinals brought with it an unexpected twist as Rupert and Shawn Bowen faced off and both shook their tires after the start. Bowen recovered from the incident and went on to the finals against Mike McIntire Jr. The tree turned green and the duo raced side-by-side until McIntire got out of the groove and Bowen capitulated ahead giving him the first win of 2016.

JR Carr looked like the car to beat in the Pro Stock class after he put down a 6.234 at 225.26 mph pass in the first round of qualifying. The 2015 Memphis winner secured the top spot for Sunday’s eliminations followed by Trevor Eman and John Konigshofer. JR Carr’s trek to the winner’s circle was cut short in the first round of eliminations as he encountered problems on the track and 2015 IHRA Pro Stock Champion Cary Goforth defeated him with a 6.484 at 223.02 mph pass. Goforth and John Pluchino matched up in the final round of eliminations. Pluchino encountered a similar fate as Carr, and Goforth claimed the win with a 6.35 at 224.58 mph run.

The Pro Mod class became a battle of new series regulars Billy Harper, Jerico Baldulf and Adam Flamholc. Harper set a new elapsed time record in qualifying with a 5.875 at 241.32 mph and became the number one qualifier. In Sunday’s elimination rounds, Harper and Baldulf advanced into the semifinals but it was newcomer Adam Flamholc that quickly came into the picture. He laid down an impressive 5.894 at 237.80 mph pass against Harper’s 5.966 at 233.68 mph in the semifinals. Flamholc went up against Jerico Balduf in the Pro Mod finals and the epic battle turned into a nightmare for Balduf as a motor problem plagued the New Smyrna Beach, Florida resident. Flamholc ran a 5.884 at 246.08 mph and celebrated his first IHRA win.

2015 IHRA Nitro Motorcycle World Champion Jay Turner sported a new motorcycle over the weekend and looked to be continuing his dominate performance from last year as he qualified in the number one position. Rickey House and Randal Andras rounded out the top-three qualifiers in the Nitro Motorcycle class. Newcomer Jake Stordeur took the class by surprise as he defeated Turner in the first round of eliminations and eventually ended up going into the final round with Jay Turner’s teammate Randal Andras. Andras ran a 6.380 at 215.62 mph against Stordeur’s 6.649 at 207.75 mph run and took home the first Ironman of the 2016 season.

The 2016 IHRA Drag Racing Series season continues at the Good Vibrations Texas Nationals Fueled by Sunoco at San Antonio Raceway on April 1 – 2. The two-day show will feature the AMSOIL Nitro Funny Car class, Pro Mod, Pro Stock, Nitro Motorcycles and sportsman racing. For more information and to purchase tickets, please visit IHRADRS.com.

MILLINGTON, Tenn. (Oct. 3, 2105) – Steven Ferrow of Chattanooga, Tenn., Travis Snoden of Mt. Sterling, Ky. and Christopher Marcum of Springfield, Mo., all punched their tickets to next week’s IHRA World Finals featuring Nitro Jam on Saturday by winning their classes in the Summit SuperSeries race as part of the IHRA Team Finals at Memphis International Raceway (MIR).

Ferrow won Box, Snoden won No Box and Marcum won Junior Dragster. Each driver is now eligible to participate in the IHRA World Finals on Oct. 9-10, luckily for them they won’t have far to travel because the World Finals will be contested at MIR.

In the Box final, Ferrow cut a near perfect .008 reaction light on the way to a pass of 4.785 seconds at 136.08 mph on a 4.77 dial in. His opponent, Gerald Franks of Mobile, Ala., had a decent light himself (.040) but his 6.690 on a 6.69 dial at 101.40 mph wasn’t enough to make up for the lost time at the starting line.

In the No Box final, Snoden had a perfect reaction light on the way to a 6.794 second pass at 98.47 mph on a 6.77 dial. Runner-up Shane Rees of Carthage, Mo., finished with a lap of 6.544 at 101.20 mph on a 6.53 dial.

Marcum was dialed in to near perfection with a lap of 8.177 seconds at 75.18 mph on an 8.17 dial. His opponent Blaine Rees of Carthage, Mo., finished with a lap of 9.007 seconds at 72.80 mph on an 8.97 index.

Team MIR racers had a rough go of it in the Summit SuperSeries on Saturday. Shane Stout of Jackson, Tenn., made to the second round of Box before bowing out to eventual runner-up Franks. John Castellaw III of Dyersburg, Tenn. (No Box) and Justin Poindexter of Millington, Tenn. (Jr. Dragster) both lost their first round matchup.

Competition at the IHRA Team Finals wraps up on Sunday when the teams from the 11 different tracks represented at MIR will battle it out for the coveted team championship. Gates open at 8 a.m., time trials at 10 a.m. and the main event begins at noon.

Goforth Takes Over the Points Lead, Larsen Clinches the Championship

MARION, Texas (September 26, 2015) – The San Antonio Nationals Fueled by Sunoco did not disappoint as fans witnessed a points lead change in the Pro Stock class, a new winner in 2015 and the clinching of a championship in the Jet Dragster class.

The International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) returned to San Antonio Raceway for the eleventh Nitro Jam event of the 2015 season. The race was pivotal in determining potential championship winners for the season finale in Memphis in two weeks. The weekend produced many unexpected story lines in all three classes competing for points at the San Antonio Nationals Fueled by Sunoco.

The AMSOIL Nitro Funny Car presented by Aeromotive class was one of the main topics as Mike McIntire Jr. failed to qualify for his first-ever Nitro Jam event since he started racing full-time in 2014. Current points leader, Jason Rupert also had a rough weekend as the 2014 IHRA Champion did not advance to the semi-finals. The championship is still up for grabs as the duo head into the Summit World Finals. John Smith claimed the victory and grabbed his first IHRA Ironman trophy in his “Jungle Jim” Camaro.

John Montecalvo came into the San Antonio Nationals Fueled by Sunoco with the Pro Stock points lead but after a consistent performance by Cary Goforth, the lead changed. Goforth won his first Pro Stock race since the season-opener at Tucson in February. He was the top qualifier and followed it up with a holeshot win against Scott Hintz in the final round. The 6.36 at 221.13 mph placed the 2014 IHRA World Champion in the winner’s circle and gave him the points lead with one race remaining.

Elaine Larsen clinched the 2015 IHRA Jet Dragster World Championship and finished runner-up in Jet Dragster competition this weekend. The 2014 Champion has secured her spot in the IHRA history books prior to heading into the Summit World Finals. Shea Holbrook defeated the newly crowned Champion in the final round after running a 5.92 at 268.98 mph. This marked the first IHRA Ironman win for Holbrook in her first year of competition.

The Outlaw Fuel Altereds joined the professional classes this weekend at San Antonio Raceway. Donny Massey went up against Mary Reep in the final round and took home the win. Massey ran a 3.88 at 187.27 mph against Reep’s 3.96 at 167.16 mph. In addition, Brian Jernigan and Rickey House brought out their Nitro Harley’s and did some exhibition runs for the fans during the two-day event.

The next event on the IHRA Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series schedule is the Summit World Finals featuring Nitro Jam at Memphis International Raceway on October 9 – 10, 2015. Four championships are up for grabs: AMSOIL Nitro Funny Car presented by Aeromotive, Pro Stock, Pro Mod and Nitro Harley; leading into the final race of the 2015 season. Tickets are now available online at www.NitroJam.com.

NORWALK, Ohio (September 16, 2015) – The Mountain Motor Pro Stock class is enjoying their second season back with the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) Drag Racing Series and the on-track action has been nonstop. With just two events remaining on the schedule, the top-three drivers are separated by only 51 points and the San Antonio Nationals Fueled by Sunoco will be a pivotal race in deciding the championship.

John Montecalvo currently has the points lead in his first fulltime season back with the IHRA since he won the World Championship in 2009. The Center Moriches, New York driver has two wins this season in his 2012 Chevrolet Camaro. He holds a 33-point lead over 2014 IHRA World Champion, Cary Goforth. This season Goforth has accumulated one win and two runner-up finishes in his 2014 Chevrolet Camaro. The Holdenville, Oklahoma native is looking to defend his title and add a sixth Pro Stock Championship to his resume.

John DeFlorian Jr. sits third in the Nitro Jam point standings with one win and two runner-up finishes in 2015. DeFlorian won his first IHRA Pro Stock race at the San Antonio Nationals last year and is looking for a repeat performance. The Arnold, Missouri resident currently holds the IHRA speed record in Mountain Motor Pro Stock with a 226.70 mph pass on the quarter-mile and is seeking his first Championship.

All three of the top contenders have something in common this season as they each lost in round one of eliminations at the last Nitro Jam event in Grand Bend, Ontario. The San Antonio Nationals will be a breakout race as each driver is looking to make up points from a lost opportunity at the Mopar Nationals.

Debuting in the early 1970s, the Mountain Motor Pro Stock class is one of the original classes in the IHRA and one of the most exciting. The powerful 820 plus cubic inch engines put out more than 1,500 horsepower and travel at speeds more than 220 mph.

The championship title in every class is still up for grabs and the competition will be fierce heading into the San Antonio Nationals Fueled by Sunoco at San Antonio Raceway on September 25 – 26. The Summit World Finals featuring Nitro Jam follows on October 9 – 10 at Memphis International Raceway and marks the final event this season. Tickets are available online for both events at www.NitroJam.com.

AUGUST 8, 2015 (Martin, Michigan) – Three Nitro Jam racers scored a pair of victories for the double-event weekend. The fans in the stands hung on every pass after Jason Rupert beat the ET and mph record during Friday night qualifying. All eyes were on every pass the remainder of the weekend to see if he could back up his astounding 5.551 ET which is over 1/10th of a second under the current record. As the weekend closed, Mike McIntire is still the reigning ET and mph record holder as Rupert could not back up his record by the mandatory 1% within the same event the initial record is recorded.

Rupert attempted to back it up three times today. Unfortunately the Yorba Linda, California driver was unable to do so but he did pick up a second Ironman for the weekend and scoring his fourth IHRA Nitro Funny Car victory in as many races. Rupert defeated Paul Romine in the final of the US 131 Motorsports Park event with a 5.939 run at 241.68 with a .104 reaction while Romine, from Fishers, Indiana, left at .104 and made a 8.196 pass at 108.28 mph.

Bill Lutz and Steve Matusek faced off in the Crower Pro Mod final round. Matusek, from Kansas City, Missouri, went red with a -.242 reaction. Lutz, from Canal Winchester, Ohio, left at .147, taking home the Ironman and the Aeromotive $200 bonus for competing with their decal.

Jay Turner extended his points lead for the Nitro Harley championship chase. The Julian, North Carolina competitor picked up his second win of the weekend with a 6.319 at 230.18 mph with a .051 reaction. Randal Andras, from Amelia, Louisiana, finished runner-up with a 7.142 run at 144.83 mph with a .039 light. Jay Turner scored some breathing room in his bid for a IHRA World Championship as he and Tracy Kile were only 3 points apart in national points competition leading into this pair of events.

Matt Bertsch was the third driver to take home a matched set of Ironmen this weekend. In the Pro Stock final, Bertsch left the line in his 2007 Mustang at .022 while Cary Goforth went red with a .003 light in his 2013 Camaro.

Jet Dragster competition closed out the night with Shea Holbrook and Marisha Falk squaring off in the final. Holbrook, from Groveland, Florida, left before the third activation light, handing Falk the win. Falk, from Port Orange, Florida, cut a .131 light.
