Gurney-Fogarty Dominate Rolex Action At Watkins Glen
- Updated: August 10, 2007
Watkins Glen, N. Y. ? The powerful driving duo of Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty totally dominated the Crown Royal 200 Friday evening at Watkins Glen International. The two-hour Rolex Series Daytona Prototype race started in daylight and ended in darkness.
Leading from the drop of the green flag, Fogarty pulled out to a commanding lead in the first segment of the race before turning the Gainsco/Bob Stallings Pontiac Riley over to co-driver Gurney. They led 81 of the 82 lap race. Due to a late race caution period, the winners were only 1.757 seconds ahead of the second place car.
?It was a perfect day,? Gurney said. Added Fogarty, ?Our car was really hooked up, and I was giving it 100 per cent all the time.?
Their win tightened up the point race with Scott Pruett and Max Angelelli tied for the lead and today?s winners have closed within four points. Two races remain in the 12-race season.
Second place went to the SunTrust Racing Pontiac Riley steered by the hard-charging Angelelli and Champ Car stalwart Memo Gidley
Each driver tangled with another car with the most severe in incident coming on the last lap when Angelelli tangled with the third place car of Colin Braun. Angelelli was furious with Braun, who went from third place to 11th at the finish.
Pruett and teammate Memo Rojas soared from their 14th place starting position to gain third place in their Chip Ganassi with Felix Sabates Lexus Riley.
Jim Matthews and Marc Goosens took fourth place and fifth went to David Donohue and Darren Law.
Twenty-one cars started the event.
